چکیده

As engineers, we often find ourselves spending a non-trivial amount of time converting sketched diagrams and figures into digital format. A lot of research has been done in conversion of hand-drawn sketches to computer drawings. However, most of it is domain-specific with training templates which must first demonstrate the shapes the user first intends to recognize as suggested by Kara and Stahovich [1] as well as Puzicha et al. [2]. Other algorithms are optimized for specific domains (e.g. for military drawings [3]). Due to the variability in drawing trends and variation in interpretation, a robust domainindependent algorithm is lacking. In this paper we describe a domain-independent algorithm for basic shape detection. The shape detection algorithm works by detecting corners using the Harris corner detector. The corners are then removed which allows for line detection. The lines are then combined into shapes. Since the images are captured using a hand-held device, perspective distortion is taken into account by applying homography. Slightly slanted lines are then converted into perfect horizontal/vertical lines due to unavoidable imperfections in human hand-drawn shapes.

A Method to Generate Freeform Curves from a Hand-drawn Sketch

When designers begin a product design, they create their ideas and expand them. This process is performed on paper, and designers’ hand-drawn lines are called sketches. If the designers’ hand-drawn sketches can be realized as real curves, it would be effective in shortening the design period. We have developed a method to extract five degree Bézier curves based on a hand-drawn sketch. The basic...

Data augmentation-assisted deep learning of hand-drawn partially colored sketches for visual search

In recent years, image databases are growing at exponential rates, making their management, indexing, and retrieval, very challenging. Typical image retrieval systems rely on sample images as queries. However, in the absence of sample query images, hand-drawn sketches are also used. The recent adoption of touch screen input devices makes it very convenient to quickly draw shaded sketches of obj...

On the Semantic Labeling of Hand-drawn Sketches

We propose a preliminary study for the application of Computational Linguistics techniques such as the Semantic Role Labeling of natural languages (SRL) to the case of sketch understanding. The idea of our approach originates from a psychological experiment where two groups of students were asked to produce and then recognize hand-drawn sketches, respectively. The paper presents a procedure to ...

Towards Semantic Role Labeling of Hand-drawn Sketches

In this paper we propose an exploratory study for the application of Computational Linguistics techniques such as the Semantic Role Labeling of natural languages (SRL) to the case of sketch understanding. Our approach originated from a preliminary psychological experiment in which participants were asked to produce hand-drawn sketches from sentences embedding various semantic features; the effe...

Clustering Hand-Drawn Sketches via Analogical Generalization

One of the major challenges to building intelligent educational software is determining what kinds of feedback to give learners. Useful feedback makes use of models of domain-specific knowledge, especially models that are commonly held by potential students. To empirically determine what these models are, student data can be clustered to reveal common misconceptions or common problem-solving st...
